Environmental Storytelling Notes
Design Document: Environmental Narrative
This document outlines the approach to environmental storytelling—how space, objects, and atmosphere communicate narrative without explicit exposition.
Core Concept
Every location is a character. The environment reveals history, culture, and emotional state through:
- Spatial Design - Architecture reflects society structure
- Objects & Artifacts - Found items tell micro-stories
- Visual Language - Color and texture convey tone
- Sound Design - Ambient audio establishes place identity

Implementation Examples
The Marketplace District
- Cluttered stalls suggest economic struggle
- Worn banners hint at faded prosperity
- Graffiti marks territorial boundaries
- Sound: haggling voices, creaking wood
The Archive Tower
- Organized shelves suggest order and control
- Dust implies abandonment
- Temperature drop communicates isolation
- Sound: silence broken by distant bells

Practical Guidelines
Prioritize subtlety over exposition. Let observant players discover narrative depth through exploration. Environmental storytelling should reward attention without creating confusion for casual players.
